I headed offshore this morning in search of an early season silver king. I joined the pod of boats drifting baits about 3 miles out. Two guys hooked up as soon as I pulled in so I thought it was going to be on fire. I drifted baits among the pack but only caught small sharks and a large spanish mackerel. Most of the boats dispersed within the hour for lack of fish so I headed back to the launch. A few hundred yards off the beach I saw a big tripletail hanging around a crab trap buoy. I made over a dozen casts to him before finally getting his attention at which point he thumped the DOA shrimp hard! After I set the hook he immediately jumped which gave me a good glimpse of what I was dealing with. It ended up being my largest tripletail at 26" (pinched) which puts it around 15lbs. I was just glad to finally land a big one after losing a monster that pulled me around for 20 minutes last May.
