Weather: 5-10mph West Wind, partly cloudy
Tide: 0.01ft at 6pm

With a pretty low tide in the evening, we decided to fish Pine Island for redfish. Four of us launched at 4pm to catch the last of the outgoing along with the first two hours of the incoming tide. The water was very warm and the floating grass was everywhere making it tough to throw a topwater. We started blind casting where I was able to pick up a 21" red on a gold spoon. Nothing else was happening so we hit our favorite flat.

Empty! Except for schools of mullet and the occasional shark. Even after the tide came in the redfish did not show up on the flat. I did chase one for a while but he ended up spooking after banging my anchor on the kayak. We started heading back toward the launch around 7:30pm and wouldn't you know it...there were the reds. I found a pair of wading blue herons and as I approached I saw a school of big reds. I threw a Gulp shrimp into their path but they just laughed. I called the rest of the gang over since this particular flat was lit up with tailers for a good hundred yards. After more refusals I switched to my old faithful bait...Exude RT Slug. Saw one slowly cruising with his fin protruding the surface and casted in front of it. Tim and I saw the red swim up to my bait, tail on it, and eat. Don't know how big but my guess would be 34". All of the reds were around that size so it is good to know the big reds have finally made it to our neck of the woods. We called it a night after the last of light was fading away.
