Tide: 1.3ft high at 7:30pm, then slack til midnight
On friday I arrived at the beach around 5pm and ran a couple baits out solo just as the sun was setting. This daylight savings is screwing things up, dark by 5:30?! The first run of the night came about a quarter to 8 on a small bait which ended up being a decent low 6's bull. My 12/0 went off in the middle of fighting the bull but as you can imagine I had a little trouble setting the hook with my hands tied up on the 6/0. Ryan and Laura made it out to the beach just as I inserted a tag and released the bull. Better late than never, eh Ryan?
I put another bait out and within 5 minutes it gets picked up...click click...ZZZZzZ..the first run was impressive. I started freakin out because it was on the 6/0 wide and this thing would not stop running!
The crab traps had me more worried than anything else but when I got down to half my backing I started going crazy and locked the drag down..luckily Ryan was more sensible than me at the time and had me back off the drag and hope he turned on his own, which he did. The next 45 minutes was an up and down battle with strong runs parallel to the sand but in the end, the 6/0 prevailed. He taped out at 7'11", although we probably could've squeezed 8' out of em. Tagged and released..
Next run, Laura's turn with a blacktip. The remainder of the night we watched Ryan's 14/0 get picked up a dozen times while the other rods remained inactive..it was actually quite entertaining watching him walk over to the rod just as the run stopped, lol. He eventually stuck a 6'2" bull..good thing too because it was getting too cold out!
